Royal Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller, Alberta

I love photogenic museums. When we were in Berlin, I took tons of photos at the Deutsche Kinemathek museum, which has a spectacular building and gorgeous exhibits. Today we visited the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller, Alberta and I snapped a few pics.

So close to me and yet still so far away. Dammit. Hope you and your family enjoyed the museum. Tis a family favourite of ours.

That is an awesome museum. I've been there many times as I now live and did attended school off and on in Central Alberta. We went there on Field trips and brought family there that was visiting from outta province. I even brought my older son there as a toddler. Last year he went on a field trip there with his class. Your pictures make me want to go for a visit again. It's been a few years.

Was the greenhouse area closed? I don't see any pictures of it. It was really beautiful.

MyBoysBlue:

No, it was open. I just didn't get a chance to take pictures in there. I was chasing kids. :)

I have just one lovely photo of my oldest kiddo at the Tyrell Museum. She was maybe eighteen months old, and didn't stand still long enough for me to take out my camera much at all! But she loved spinning all of the globes and wasn't afraid at all of all the dinosaur teeth!

We wanted to visit there in November, the last time we were in Canada. My boys would LOVE it. But it snowed a messed with all our travel plans. Next time. Maybe it's too snowy/cold there now, but we went to the Great Sand Hills and it was amazing:

I have that same opening picture from the entrance to the museum! When I saw Chasmosaurus there it became my favourite dinosaur, it's the one who's head bones look like a heart, hollow in the middle. Have you gone up the "biggest dinosaur" at the Tourist Centre yet? Great view of the Badlands!

That looks like such a fun museum! I wish we had something like that around here.

What an amazing museum! Did you ever get a chance to visit the NaturKunde Museum in Berlin? That is a favorite of my little guy! errr...big guy now.

We spend a lot of time in museums here in Ottawa because my New Year's resolution last year was to visit all of them (not that I succeeded...) Taking photos in museums can be very frustrating since often the light is terrible. Your photos are beautiful!

Ha ha. I just posted on going to a local museum. My photo taking experience was bit different:

The photos in the other post I linked to at the top of this one are "illegal" photos. I found out as we were going through the last room of the museum that photography was not allowed (a guard approached me as I was about to snap a pic), but decided to post the pics I had taken anyway (at my own risk, I guess). My pics are mostly of the spectacular building and not of the artifacts anyway.

That was such a different experience from the Royal Tyrrell, where they are actually hosting a flickr photo contest, encouraging people to take pictures and to post them to their flickr group.

I just read your reply about the photos being illegal - we had something like this in San Diego and I snapped away until I saw the signs (everywhere) about not taking photos.

Anyway, I have some good photos but yours are wonderful.

Our set up was so realistic that the little boy I took (who was 5) finally teared up halfway through and asked if the dinosaurs were going to kill him. I wondered why he had been so still and quiet...

I recently took the children to the Philadelphia Museum of Natural History (a.k.a. the Dinosaur Museum) and it was positively wonderful. Mummies, dinosaurs, taxidermy, bones...

And, perhaps sadly, or perhaps not (for us) - it was completely empty. It was fabulous for the children because they got very individualized attention from the museum guides, but sad, as I wondered if a museum like this just wasn't tech-y or modern enough to hold the attention of today's children. Thank you for sharing your experience & photos!

Looks like you had the museum all to yourselves :) Wish we had something like that here. Loved the virtual tour though, thanks!
