Parenting issues and the Canadian election

Canada goes to the polls on October 14!

I can't put my finger on why, but for some reason this election is tweaking my interest more than past ones have. And since I now have this parenting blog, I thought that a great way that I could get involved in the election, help inform my own decision (I haven't decided who is getting my vote yet, but I've done some narrowing down), and be of service to my readers would be to dissect the platforms of each of the five (yes, five) main parties and give you a summary of where each of them stands on family/parenting issues.

But I could use your help. Drop me a line in the comments or by e-mail at phdinparenting at gmail.com and let me know what parenting and family issues are important to you in this election and I'll keep that in mind as I review the platforms. I will be going through the actual detailed platforms as I work on my posts, but I also love reading other thoughts on the issues, so if you come across any interesting articles or blogs on parenting issues in the Canadian election campaign, let me know about those too.

For my American readers, I don't want to stick my nose too far into your politics, although it is tempting, oh so tempting, and I have slipped a bit in that direction! However, I can certainly provide some links to interesting resources on parenting issues in the current Presidential race.  For example, The Crunchy Domestic Goddess pointed me towards Moms Rising, a group seeking to raise the profile of parenting and family issues in American politics. Send me any suggestions for good resources and maybe I'll put together a page of links.

Issues that are important to me are maternity leave, pay during maternity leave, longer maternity leave (until at least 18 months), free daycare/child care.

Can you tell that my maternity leave is nearly up? :(

For anyone following this, all of the parties other than the Conservatives have now released their platforms and my posts on the other parties are almost done. I had hoped to release all of the posts at the same time, but am sick of waiting for the Tories to post their full platform. So I'll post the others and then think about cobbling something together on the Conservatives based on announcements they've made so far and their record since they formed the government.

Hopefully I'll have it all posted by Friday, Oct 3.
