When I started this blog five years ago, I didn't know what it would become. I knew that parenting was both an art and a science and I embarked on my proverbial PhD in Parenting with that in mind. Now, 800 posts, 25 thousand comments and 3 million page views later, I have a better idea what I want to focus on in my proverbial PhD.

The last question of my survey on what it means to support breastfeeding was an open-ended one. I asked if there was anything else you wanted to say about what it means to support breastfeeding and more than 500 you did. In this post, I'm going to share some of those comments, to give you an idea of the nature and variety of them.

Last week, I asked fellow Canadians on twitter if they support breastfeeding. A lot of people asked "what do you mean by support?". I think the answer is different for each person, but I was interested to hear from you. If you do consider yourself a breastfeeding supporter, what does that mean? I wanted to know, so I put together a survey, open to both Canadians and non-Canadians, and asked a bunch of questions about factors that are often or sometimes equated with breastfeeding support. I got 1631 responses to the survey.

Some people responded, "Yes, I believe in choice". Other people responded "No, I believe in choice". Other people responded with "what do you mean by support?". I asked the question because I do a lot of breastfeeding support and breastfeeding advocacy work and I wanted to ensure that I was following the right people and engaging the right people and I wanted to be a bit more organized about it.
But it created some confusion that I didn't intend. So I decided to clarify it by asking you what it means to be a breastfeeding supporter.

According to End Child Poverty, one third of children in the UK are living in poverty. According to the National Literary Trust, one third of children in the UK do not own a book and half of children don't enjoy reading.
Those are disturbing statistics.
Now McDonald's plans to put books in Happy Meals instead of plastic toys. Is that a positive move or not?
