Mamafit goals for January 2010

I wrote a few days ago about wanting to be myself again and getting back into shape in 2010. I'm a very goal oriented person and while I don't want to set specific goals for pounds lost (not what this is about) or for calories consumed (I love food and try to eat healthy), I do want to set some fitness related goals so that I can track my progress that way.

For January 2010, here is what I want to do each week:

  • Play basketball twice per week.

  • Burn 1000 calories on my treadmill, most likely through three evening walks and one weekend morning run. I should note this isn't really 1000 calories. My treadmill doesn't have anywhere to enter your weight, so it is basing the number of calories burned on an average weight, so I am probably burning at least 1/3 more than what the machine tells me. But my goals will be based on the number on the machine, since I can quantitatively track that.

  • Do something active outdoors with my kids (in the snow!) each weekend (note: the kids get outdoors to do things a lot more frequently than that, but just not always with me since I work out of home).

  • If I miss a basketball game or outdoor activity with the kids for some reason, replace each missed activity with another 300 calories on the treadmill.

In addition to my fitness goals, I do want to try reducing the amount of sugar in our diets. Julie from Natural Transitions wrote a post New Year, New Resolve with some ideas for doing this (as well as her fitness goals) and I have also ordered a few books and will be checking out some websites which I'll share along the way too.

Note: I've added a new category to my category menu called Mom's Health to track my progress in this regard and other topics related to a mother's physical and mental health (have to go back and recategorize some other posts at some point).

Best wishes! Those are great goals! It seems like they are realistic and manageable. I also like the fact that you have a plan for "make ups." :) I eliminated sugar from my diet for 3 weeks in November and again (kind of) in December. I felt SO great when I was sugar free. Even if eliminating the sugar didn't affect my weight at all, I felt a lot better and wanted to do the physical activities I'd been avoiding for a while.

Yay for MamaFit! I'm excited to lose weight and happy that we can all support each other on Twitter. Good luck on your goals. I should make some fitness goals.

Fitness and good nutrition are great goals, and among my own. I wish you good luck!

However, Julie's list of approaches to going sugar free is full of unsubstantiated pseudoscientific balderdash. If anyone cares to support those claims with actual research, I'd be willing to read it and change my mind (and there are a couple real facts sprinkled in there), but when someone claims that artificial sweeteners are "worse for fluctuating blood sugar levels than sugar itself" and are all carcinogenic except Stevia, and also advocates a bunch of herbs and supplements, I have really hard time taking her seriously.

@Cogito: I don't know enough about the science behind it to say one way or another. For us it is more about finding ways to bake with less sugar and buying foods that are naturally sweet rather than ones with buckets of processed or fake sugars added to them.

These are awesome strategies! Do you have some good music cued up for your treadmill time? Or do you read or watch shows? I find music works the best for me (trying to read anything substantial is always too frustratingly jumpy for me), but to each her own!

I just hung up two slinky dresses that I fit into 3 years ago to display in my bedroom as motivators/reminders too. I'm going all out with the cliches!

I am inspired by your goals. I am trying to slow down my eating and stop unhealthy snacks M-F: I am hoping that I will become a much more aware eater. In the 3 days I've been doing this, I realize how frequently I reach for a snack when I'm stressed or bored. It's early days, but I am become more aware. Thanks for sharing and keeping us posted.
