It's all fun and games until....

A phrase I remember hearing often as a child was:
It's all fun and games until someone...

...gets hurt

...loses an eye

...falls off the bed

...gets run over by a car.

That's what happens when you grow up in a home with three younger siblings and a dad that often provoked the rough housing that led to my mother uttering those words.

Now that my kids are at ages where they are starting to interact more and play with each other, I find myself in that strange place of wanting to encourage their interaction, but also feeling like I have to be the referee. My 3 year old son doesn't understand his strength and doesn't realize that his little sister is not made out of rubber. And my 1 year old daughter has no idea that poking your finger in someone's eye or biting their finger actually hurts. And neither of them has the self control to not push back when the other one does hurt them.

So I've been rattling on...be careful...don't push...slow down...stop that! And this is just them playing and enjoying each others company. I can't imagine what it will be like when they actually try to hurt each other. Sigh.
