The down side of co-sleeping
Friday, May 30, 2008
My son has a cough. It wakes him up from time to time, but for the most part he just keeps sleeping. The problem is, it keeps me and my husband awake. And it wakes up my daughter, who I then have to get back to sleep.
We are currently on vacation, so all four of us are in a room together. So one restless sleeper, one person coughing, one person snoring, one person getting up to go to the bathroom, can end up keeping the whole family up for a good part of the night.
Don't get me wrong. We are committed co-sleepers. But there are some nights where I'd like to go and sleep on the couch!
At home, we use a divide and conquer strategy. My husband puts our son to bed in his room in his double bed. I put our daughter to bed in our shared king-sized bed. My husband sometimes sleeps with my daughter and me and sometimes with our son. Having multiple large sized beds makes this type of bed hopping easy and allows is to enjoy co-sleeping without having the whole family kept up when one person has a cough.
Right now I'm hoping his cough settles before I go to bed. But even if it doesn't, I'll forget all about the bad night's sleep when we have our family cuddle in the morning....

"Divide and conquer" is exactly the phrase I use to describe our nighttime routine as well. Unfortunately, my older son's bed is a single and our bed is a Queen, so things are a little more crowded in our co-sleeping house. Colds are a challenge, I agree. We're just coming out of a 3-week-long cold and it hasn't been easy. Hope you manage to get some sleep.
